Black, Gay and Christian....yes it's possible.

Caller you say what?

I recently listened to a radio broadcast that hosted a conversation about homosexuality and the bible. It was an intriguing interview between the host and two pastors, all of which had the same views about the topic. Of course they were 100% against homosexuality and saw no place for them at the Lord's table; but I refused to change the station, even after so many comments were made that were offensive to me as a black Christian gay man. I was amazed by how much intensity and passion they exerted as they spoke about how gays were not created by God and would be judged accordingly. I listened to people call in and side with their views; applauding them for having the courage to stand up for what was "right" in the eyes of God.

However, what amazed me  most was the fact that one of those pastors was in a long term relationship with his male lover. Of course this is not public knowledge, but I -being someone with a great amount of inside dirt- felt it would have been best for that pastor to have remained off the air and as far away from this topic as possible. I have no problem with and totally understand the reasons why many African American gay clergy members remain hidden. The topic of homosexuality is one that is filled with questions, criticism and judgement; but to dispense messages that you yourself are not adhering to does far greater damage than anything else.

It would really turn the church world upside down if those of us that knew the true orientation of those that are being sexually deceitful, decided to just purge all of our information. I know so many pastors, elders, deacons and other leaders of faith that are leading double lives, but it is not my place or style to "out" anyone prematurely. I do pray that those (closeted gays) that are spreading messages of hate and ostracizing about homosexuals realize that they too will have to answer to God. I serve a God of truth and honesty; a God that has taught me to have integrity and honor and not mislead His people. By being a man of faith, I am accountable to spread a message of love, first and foremost, and exemplify that love in my behavior.

The interview with the pastors ended on a high note and all were enthused by their oratorical skills. However, will the black church ever be ready to truly dissect what the bible says about homosexuality. Will they ever be ready to truly ask God the questions that could possibly change their views and opinions. The African American church is using the bible to push an agenda that is not God given. The same way the white slave owner, used the bible to justify slavery....(know your history).
